Dog breed life span chart: how long does each breed live?
This chart lists every breed in our database with its typical life span in years, sorted from longest to shortest. Sort it by weight or size class and a pattern appears that research keeps finding: smaller dogs generally live longer than larger ones.
The life spans here are typical ranges drawn from breed clubs and veterinary sources, so treat them as averages, not predictions. Many dogs live beyond the range for their breed and others fall short, and hybrids are hardest to predict because they inherit from both parents.
Size is only part of the picture. Researchers are still working out why large dogs age faster, and most findings are associations rather than proof. What you can influence is clearer: a healthy weight, regular dental care and routine vet visits all matter. A study of companion dogs found no significant difference in survival between purebred and mixed-breed dogs, so pedigree is not the deciding factor either.

Tap a column heading to sort. Ranges are typical adult figures from breed standards and breed clubs; individual dogs vary, and hybrids vary most.
How we ranked them
This is a reference table, not a ranking of which breeds are better. It includes every breed in our database that has a life span range, sorted by the midpoint of that range, longest first. Ranges come from our breed profiles, which draw on breed clubs and veterinary sources. They describe typical dogs, every dog is an individual, and hybrids vary most.
Before you choose
Use the chart to plan, not to worry. If you are choosing a breed, read the life span next to size, health and temperament. A shorter-lived giant breed can be a wonderful companion, but be ready for senior care earlier.
Compare your dog's years with human years using our dog age calculator, and make a senior-care plan with your vet as your dog ages. Keep weight under control too; our guide on how to tell if your dog is overweight is a good start. Ask your vet which check-ups and screenings suit each stage of your dog's life.
For the breeds with the most time ahead, see the longest-living dogs list.
Frequently asked questions
How long do dogs live on average?
It depends on size and breed. Smaller dogs generally live longer than large and giant breeds, and individual breeds range widely. Use the chart to see the typical range for the breed you are considering.
Why do large dogs live shorter lives?
Researchers do not fully know. One idea is that large dogs age faster, perhaps because they grow quickly, and large breeds die more often from cancer. The pattern is an association, and the cause is still uncertain.
Do mixed-breed dogs live longer than purebreds?
A study of dogs seen at three US primary care clinics found no significant difference in survival between purebred and mixed-breed dogs. Size mattered more.
Does the chart guarantee my dog's life span?
No. The ranges are typical figures for a breed, and individual dogs can live well beyond or fall short of them. Weight, dental care and regular vet visits all play a part.
