Dog breed weight chart: how big does each breed get?
This chart lists every breed in our database with its typical adult weight, sorted from heaviest to lightest. Dogs vary enormously: the smallest breeds weigh only a few pounds, while the biggest top 150 lb (68 kg). Tap any column heading to sort by size class, height, weight or life span instead.
Use the chart to get a feel for what a breed looks like as an adult, especially if you are choosing a puppy. The numbers are typical ranges from breed standards and breed clubs, so a healthy individual can fall a little outside them, and hybrids vary most of all.
A breed's range is not a target for your dog. Healthy weight depends on bone structure and body condition, and extra pounds matter: overweight dogs tend to live shorter lives, particularly in very small breeds. Your vet can tell you what weight suits your dog.

How we ranked them
This is a reference table, not a ranking of which breeds are better. It includes every breed in our database that has a weight range, sorted by the midpoint of that range, heaviest first. Weights come from our breed profiles, drawing on breed standards and breed clubs. Individual dogs differ and hybrids vary most, so use the figures as a guide, not a standard.
Before you choose
Estimate your puppy's adult size with our puppy weight calculator, then compare it with the breed range. Treat the result as an estimate, since growth varies. For hybrids, look at both parent breeds.
Weight affects feeding. The dog food calculator turns your dog's weight into a daily calorie estimate, and your vet should confirm it, especially for puppies, seniors and dogs with medical conditions.
Check body condition, not only the scale. Extra weight is linked to shorter lives and raises the risk of heatstroke, and our guide to how to tell if your dog is overweight walks through what you should see and feel.
Frequently asked questions
How big will my puppy get?
Start with the breed's weight range and, for mixed breeds, both parents if you know them. A puppy weight calculator gives an estimate, and your vet can track growth at checkups.
Is my dog overweight if it is above the breed range?
Not necessarily. Dogs differ in build, and a lean dog can sit above a range while an overweight one sits inside it. Body condition tells you more than the number on the scale, so ask your vet.
Why do some breeds have a wide weight range?
Sex, bloodline and build all influence adult size, and breed standards allow some variation. Hybrids vary more because their parents can differ in size.
How do I sort the chart?
