Can dogs eat
Bread?
In moderation
Plain, fully baked bread is generally safe for dogs in small amounts, but it adds little nutrition. Raw yeast dough is dangerous and needs urgent veterinary attention.

Why it’s fine in small amounts
The AKC says plain white and wheat bread are generally safe for dogs and usually do not cause stomach upset. Bread is high in calories and carbohydrate, though, so it is a treat in very small pieces, not a meal replacement. Unless your dog has a wheat allergy, plain bread probably will not hurt.
Watch the ingredients. Raisin bread is the biggest danger, because raisins are toxic to dogs and even a few can cause problems. Garlic bread can cause abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, weakness and collapse. Xylitol is toxic to dogs, so check labels on bread and baked goods.
The real emergency is raw yeast dough. Pet Poison Helpline explains that unbaked dough expands in the warm, moist stomach, which can cause bloating and, less commonly, a twisted stomach. As the yeast ferments the dough's sugars it also produces alcohol, which is rapidly absorbed into the blood and can cause dangerously low blood sugar, blood pressure and body temperature, and in severe cases seizures and respiratory failure.
Benefits
- Plain bread is a harmless occasional treat for most dogs
- Soft and easy to tear into small pieces
Risks
- Offers little nutrition and adds calories
- Raw yeast dough expands in the stomach and produces alcohol, which is an emergency
- Raisin and garlic breads are unsafe
- Wheat allergy in some dogs
- Some products contain xylitol
How to serve it safely
Offer only very small pieces of plain, fully baked white or wheat bread as an occasional snack, with no butter, garlic or toppings. Check the ingredient list for raisins, xylitol, onion or garlic.
Keep treats under about 10% of daily calories. Never give raw dough, and keep rising dough somewhere dogs and children cannot reach, such as a closed oven or high cupboard. If your dog has a food allergy or is overweight, pick a lower-calorie treat instead.

If your dog already ate it
If your dog ate a small piece of plain bread, you can usually watch at home for mild stomach upset.
If your dog ate raw bread dough, call your vet or an emergency clinic immediately, even if your dog seems normal. Warning signs include a swollen belly, unproductive retching, vomiting, lethargy, weakness, staggering or collapse. In the US, call ASPCA Animal Poison Control at (888) 426-4435 or Pet Poison Helpline at (855) 764-7661 (fees may apply). Do not make your dog vomit at home and do not wait for symptoms. Also call if the bread contained raisins, xylitol or garlic.
Frequently asked questions
Can dogs eat white bread?
Yes, plain white bread is generally safe in very small pieces, but it adds calories with little benefit.
What happens if a dog eats raw bread dough?
The yeast ferments in the warm stomach, producing gas and alcohol. This can cause bloating, vomiting, weakness and worse. Call a vet immediately.
Is bread good for dogs with upset stomachs?
The AKC points to a bland diet of rice and boiled chicken, or a call to the vet, rather than bread. Ask your vet what to feed.
Can dogs eat bread crusts?
Plain crusts are fine in very small amounts. Tear them up for small dogs to avoid choking.
