Can dogs eat
Salmon?
In moderation
Yes, if it is fully cooked, boneless and plain, and only in moderation. Raw or undercooked salmon is dangerous because it can carry the bacterium that causes salmon poisoning disease, which can be fatal.

Why it’s fine in small amounts
Fully cooked salmon is a good, protein-rich food for dogs, and plain fillets are the best way to serve it. AKC says to remove all bones and skip seasonings, oils and sauces.
Raw salmon is a different matter. Raw or undercooked salmon, trout and Pacific giant salamanders can carry a fluke infected with a bacterium called Neorickettsia helminthoeca, which causes salmon poisoning disease. The Merck Veterinary Manual says it occurs only in the Pacific Northwest of the US, from northern California to Alaska and especially between northern California and Puget Sound. Signs usually appear 5 to 7 days after eating infected fish, though it can take up to 33 days, and begin with fever, weakness and loss of appetite, followed by vomiting and diarrhea that can be bloody. Merck says up to 90% of affected dogs die within 7 to 10 days without treatment, and prompt treatment greatly improves survival.
There is no safe way to serve it raw. Smoked salmon and lox are also poor choices, since AKC warns against raw or smoked fish and notes their high salt content. Even cooked salmon is rich, so count it as a treat.
Benefits
- Good source of protein when fully cooked
- Fish is a source of omega-3 fatty acids, which support skin and coat, according to PetMD
- A novel protein that can help dogs with food allergies, according to PetMD
Risks
- Raw or undercooked salmon can carry the bacterium that causes salmon poisoning disease, which is often fatal without treatment
- Bones can cause choking or damage the digestive tract
- Smoked and cured salmon are very salty
- Rich and calorie-dense; too much can cause stomach upset or weight gain
- Seasonings, oils, onion and garlic make salmon dishes unsafe
How to serve it safely
Cook fresh salmon all the way through by baking, steaming or grilling it with no seasoning, oil or sauce. Remove every bone, let it cool, and flake a small amount over your dog's regular food. AKC says prepared salmon should not be fed more than about once a week and should never make up the bulk of the diet.
Keep the portion small and in proportion to your dog's size, and count it within your treat allowance of about 10% of daily calories. Canned salmon works if it is packed in water and low in sodium, and AKC says salmon-based commercial dog foods are generally safe because they are cooked. Never feed raw fish, including fish scavenged from a river or beach. Sardines are another fish option.

If your dog already ate it
If your dog ate raw or undercooked salmon, or fish scavenged from a river, stream or beach, call your vet right away, even if your dog seems fine, and mention where the fish came from. Signs usually take 5 to 7 days to appear and can take up to 33 days, so do not wait for them. Early treatment greatly improves survival.
Watch for fever, lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, swollen lymph nodes and discharge from the nose or eyes. Do not make your dog vomit at home. If your dog swallowed fish bones and shows gagging, drooling or pawing at the face, call your vet or an emergency clinic.
