Is it toxic to dogs?
Orchids
Phalaenopsis spp. · Orchidaceae
Also called Moth orchid, Moon orchid
Non-Toxic to dogs
No. ASPCA lists the moth orchid (Phalaenopsis) as non-toxic to dogs, and names Cymbidium, Dendrobium and Oncidium orchids as pet-safe too. Chewing any plant can still upset a dog's stomach.

Why it’s considered safe for dogs
Moth orchids (Phalaenopsis) are the supermarket orchids found on windowsills everywhere, and ASPCA's database lists them as non-toxic to dogs. ASPCA's pet-safe bouquet guide also names Cymbidium, Dendrobium and Oncidium orchids as considered safe for pets.
That makes orchids an easy pick for a dog home, but "safe" does not mean "snack". The ASPCA guide points out that any ingestion of a plant that is not part of a pet's normal diet may cause mild stomach upset. The potting bark, moss and any plant food or spray around the roots are separate issues from the flower.
Gift arrangements are the trap. A mixed basket can pair an orchid with plants that are toxic to dogs; peace lily and kalanchoe are two common ones. Check each plant in a gift before putting it within reach.
If your dog ate orchids
A chewed orchid leaf or flower is usually not an emergency. ASPCA lists the moth orchid as non-toxic, though your dog may have a mild upset stomach with vomiting or loose stool.
Call your vet if the signs keep going, your dog swallowed a large amount of leaf, bark or moss, or you used orchid fertilizer or a spray on the plant. In a mixed arrangement, also call if you cannot tell which plants were eaten. In the US, ASPCA Animal Poison Control is at (888) 426-4435 and Pet Poison Helpline at (855) 764-7661 (fees may apply); elsewhere, call your local emergency vet.
Do not try to make your dog vomit at home. Keep the plant tag and any product label so you can tell the vet exactly what was involved.
Keeping your dog safe
Put orchids on a shelf or table your dog cannot reach, or inside a room the dog does not use. Flower spikes that arch outward are an easy target for a curious nose.
Store orchid food and sprays in a closed cabinet, and skip pesticides on plants within reach. Pet Poison Helpline notes that fertilizers may contain added pesticides and that larger ingestions can cause serious poisoning.
When you receive a mixed gift plant, sort it: peace lily and kalanchoe belong out of reach, while African violets are on ASPCA's non-toxic list.
Frequently asked questions
Are all orchids safe for dogs?
ASPCA lists the moth orchid as non-toxic, and its bouquet guide names Cymbidium, Dendrobium and Oncidium as pet-safe. For any other orchid, look up the Latin name or ask your vet.
Why is my dog being sick after eating an orchid?
Even a non-toxic plant can cause mild stomach upset. Treated plants, potting bark or fertilizer on the roots may also play a part. Call your vet if vomiting continues.
Are orchids in a bouquet safe?
The orchids are, but bouquets often mix in other flowers. Check each type, and keep arrangements up high where your dog cannot get at them, as ASPCA advises.
Is orchid fertilizer safe for dogs?
Not necessarily. Pet Poison Helpline says fertilizers can contain iron, other minerals and added pesticides, and that larger ingestions can cause serious poisoning. Keep it stored away.
